Trump: Promises Made, Promises Broken
A lot of the focus during Trump’s 2nd presidency has been on the many objectionable actions he’s pursued. But, just as crucial are all of the things that Trump has NOT done, many of which were campaign promises that voters claimed were the reason they voted for him:
Promise Made | Promise Broken |
---|---|
Trump promised to release the Epstein files. | After finding out his name was in the files, Trump changed course. His administration still won’t release the Epstein files. Now, he’s even doing favors for Epstein’s accomplice and convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. |
Trump promised to lower prices on Day One, end inflation, and “make America affordable again.” | In reality, inflation has accelerated and prices have spiked on everything from groceries to gas — largely due to Trump’s reckless trade war. |
Trump repeatedly promised that he wouldn’t touch Medicaid or Medicare — he even said he would veto his own budget bill if it included cuts to Medicaid. | Trump signed the largest health care cut in history, costing 17 million Americans health care and raising Medicare Part D costs. |
Trump promised he would protect Social Security. | Trump’s own Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted that Trump’s “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” is a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security,” after Trump stacked the Social Security Administration with incompetent leadership, and Shadow President Elon Musk gutted the agency. |
Trump promised to stand with working people. | Trump’s billionaire-first budget is the largest wealth transfer from low-income and middle-income Americans to the ultra-wealthy. |
Trump promised to reduce or even eliminate the national debt. | Instead, Trump’s unaffordable budget will add over $3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. |
Trump promised to protect and expand in vitro fertilization access and make treatment cheaper through government assistance and rules requiring insurance companies to cover treatment for it. | Trump’s administration has no plan to fund or require health insurers to cover IVF. |
Trump vowed that he would get the U.S. out of “forever wars,” repeatedly said he would end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of returning to office, and said he would end the war in Gaza and bring peace to the Middle East. | Trump has been unable to broker deals in Ukraine and Gaza while death tolls grow. |
Of course, this is also the only President (that I could find) with an entire Wikipedia entry for all of the false or misleading statements he’s made: False or misleading statements by Donald Trump
