Another Broken Promise

After the American bombing of 3 Iranian nuclear facilities that took place on 6/21, much of the focus has been on whether or not the targets were “totally obliterated”, and if Iran may have moved nuclear material and equipment in advance.

The more important question to ask is this: Why did the President break his campaign promises to not “start wars” and to end “chaos in the Middle East”? To justify the bombings, he embraced dubious intelligence regarding Iran’s nuclear weapons readiness, hauntingly similar to how flawed intelligence about supposed ‘weapons of mass destruction’ dragged us into the Iraq war. The President’s impulsive decision to withdraw from the JCPOA agreement with Iran during his first term was a mistake. His decision to now use military attacks, without consulting Congress and instead of doing the tough work of pursuing diplomacy, will likely drive Iran to develop its atomic program in secret, much like North Korea has done.

Meanwhile back here at home, there are enormous problems screaming for solutions from our government: a broken healthcare system, 60% of Americans living paycheck-to-paycheck, unaffordable housing, Social Security’s looming insolvency…the list is long. Instead of addressing these critical issues, our government is instead attacking Iran, alienating our allies, undermining confidence in vaccines, dismantling the Department of Education and attacking universities, and cutting programs that serve the most vulnerable in our communities in order to fund tax breaks for the ultra-rich.

America, instead of being made great again, is becoming unrecognizable.
