This week — three things to do

  1. Thursday, July 30, 8:00 PM: Hands Off Our Vote national kickoff call
  2. This week: RSVP for the August 4 town hall with Alissa Ellman in Dansville
  3. Today: Call Schumer and Gillibrand on the $87 billion Iran war request

“Stand Up, Fight Back” Saturday in Lima

Stand Up, Fight Back

We stood at Lima Four Corners on Saturday with one message for the traffic rolling through: Elect Alissa Ellman, Defeat Tenney. Thank you to everyone who came, and to the marshals who kept things running.

Partway through, we stopped and stood in silence for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastián Guerrero, the two men ICE agents killed this month. Saturday was a national day of action demanding accountability, and we wanted our corner marked too. Standing quietly on a busy road with your neighbors says plenty.

GVI Endorses Alissa Ellman for Congress

It’s official: GVI is endorsing Alissa Ellman for Congress in NY-24. This one came from you. When we asked members whether GVI should endorse candidates this year, 70 percent said yes — and on one point they were clear: go all in on beating Claudia Tenney.

Genesee Valley Indivisible (GVI), an independent grass-roots organization, is pleased to announce its endorsement of Alissa Ellman for the 24th Congressional district.

Alissa Ellman will defend the Constitution, protect our civil liberties, and uphold the rule of law. She values and supports the checks and balances of the federal government by exercising appropriate oversight of the executive and judicial branches of our government. We applaud Alissa’s commitment to stand up for the residents of NY-24.

Claudia Tenney finished June with $1.37 million in the bank. We are not going to match that, and we don’t have to. What beats money in a district like ours is people who show up: signs in yards, postcards in mailboxes, knocking on doors, talking to neighbors. Here’s where to start:

  • Come to the town hall. Tuesday, August 4, Dansville Town Hall — bring a question.
  • Get a “Defeat Tenney” yard sign. $9 each. Email paj12147@gmail.com to reserve one.
  • Stand with us on August 8 in Caledonia — details below.

This Week’s Call: No Blank Check for the Iran War

Three American servicemembers were killed the weekend before last, and the administration’s answer is to ask Congress for $87 billion more. Congress never authorized this war and has passed War Powers resolutions against it. Call Sen. Schumer and Sen. Gillibrand:

Script format: “I’m a constituent from Livingston County. Congress never authorized this war, and the Senator should not fund it. Please vote no on the $87 billion supplemental and use every tool available — including War Powers — to bring this to an end.”

You can also sign the petition and call your representative.

Hands Off Our Vote is Indivisible’s election protection program — making sure every eligible voter can cast a ballot and every ballot gets counted. Thursday’s call covers the plan and how to plug in. If you do one thing this week, make it this.

Street medic training. Monroe County Medics (MCMedics) covers first aid at the larger rallies and pro-democracy events. With the Rochester Street Medics Collaborative, they’re running a 3-day training July 31–August 2. No health care experience required.

A Correction, and a Few Short Things

Correction on Medicaid work requirements. Last week we wrote that work requirements “hit July 31.” That was misleading, and a member whose family depends on Medicaid rightly asked us about it. July 31 is the date the federal rule finalizes. Nobody loses coverage that day.

States don’t have to enforce the 80-hours-a-month requirement until January 1, 2027 — that’s the deadline to organize around. Source: KFF. Our apologies for the scare, and please keep telling us when we get something wrong.

  • Tell Democratic senators to oppose the CLARITY Act. The Senate could vote within days on a crypto bill that does nothing about the president’s own crypto empire. Call or email.
  • “Defeat Tenney” yard signs — $9. Email paj12147@gmail.com to reserve yours.
  • Rapid Response Network. Complete a training to receive ICE-activity alerts for Livingston County — contact GVI for the next date.
  • Good news for a change. New York became the first state to pause new hyperscale data centers — a one-year moratorium while the state studies the energy and environmental costs. Read the announcement.
